Floor Pan Restoration

We repair floor pans according to their condition:

a complete repair including frame head and napoleon hat, or just replacing the floor pan halves.

We check the floor pan frame on our chassis jig, straighten it if necessary, and fit the new frame head precisely in front of the frame tunnel.

On request, the seams are neatly sealed, the floor pan fully painted and the cavities wax-sealed from the inside.

How much does it cost to restore the floor pan on a VW Beetle?

Knepper Bugs & more does not quote a fixed price: the cost depends on whether only the floor pan halves are replaced or the frame head and "napoleon hat" as well, and according to Rüdiger Knepper a frame head replacement almost doubles it. VW Beetle frame head: patch it or replace it?

Knepper Bugs & more recommends replacing a rusted-through frame head completely, especially for the long term, rather than patching it for the next TÜV (German vehicle inspection) test; according to Knepper, it is one of the most TÜV-relevant parts on a Beetle. The new frame head is checked on the frame jig and fitted precisely in front of the frame tunnel.

Is it enough to replace just the floor pan halves on a VW Beetle?

On a well-maintained Beetle, according to Knepper Bugs & more, it is sometimes enough to replace or repair only the floor pan halves. For this, Knepper uses floor pan halves from Käferland Frankfurt with a sheet thickness of at least 1.2 mm; cheap pans are available as thin as 0.7 to 0.8 mm.

Where does a VW Beetle floor pan rust most often?

According to Knepper Bugs & more, typical rust spots are the area under the battery, under the jacking points on the sedan, and at the front around the "napoleon hat" and frame head, where leaked brake fluid collects and rots through the floor pan halves, the "napoleon hat" and the lower part of the frame head. In 99 percent of the floor pans Knepper has inspected, a large area was badly rusted.

Why do you need a frame jig for a VW Beetle?

On the frame jig, Knepper Bugs & more checks the "napoleon hat", frame head and control arm mounts and straightens the frame if needed. If the mounts are off by just a few millimeters, the Beetle will never track cleanly straight afterwards.

Can you retrofit rack and pinion steering with a new frame head on a VW Beetle?

Yes, new frame heads have the recess for rack and pinion steering, so Knepper Bugs & more can also retrofit it on a Super Beetle 1302 or early 1303. The body is slightly modified for this.
